I was very close to one of my grandfathers.  He died in 1987 at the age of 83.  I was 32.  I realized then that I knew very little about his life before his time with me.  He was born in 1904 basically at the beginning of automobiles and much before World War I.  He lived through the depression, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.  He went from the beginning of cars to seeing jets and a man on the moon.  Despite all that, I knew nothing about his experiences or even his family.  I don't even know his parent's names.  Almost 40 years later, I still miss him.  

On the occasion of my father's 90th birthday, it dawned on me that I didn't know many of the same things about my father's life before my memory.  I knew bits and pieces of things but there was much I didn't know.  Once gone, that information is also gone.  Dad has lived from the depression until the present and seen many changes.  

I sat down with my father and taped a one hour interview.  He expressed to me, in narrative style and his own words, the story of his life.  

I transcribed the narrative, cleaned it up as far as grammer and structure, and put it in book form.  Add desired pictures, and submit to Amazon KDP.  The result is a nice paperback book available to the family as a beautiful keepsake in paperwork form.  Dad's ended up being 85 pages.  Obviously, the length would vary.  

Amazon sets a minimum price and tells you what it costs to print the book.  In my case the printing was almost $4 per book and Amazon's minimum price it allows is $5.94.  Of course at that price, I make no commission but of course that is not the goal.  

I can buy author's copys for the cost of printing and shipping. (Say $1 each).  Then to turn around and mail a copy to an out of state family member is another 5 bucks.  That makes it about $11 per copy.  

Clearly the way to go is for family members to buy direct  from Amazon for the $5.94 price.  Members will get it shipping free.

Obviously this is a time consuming process in order to do it right but the end result is well worth it.  

For now, I am offering this service for an introductory price of $199.  This is for an hour interview and up to 100 pages.  

All it takes to get it going is an hour to interview and some pictures.
